The Spud Boy’s Diner(special addition)

Paul’s take:

While we were in Lanesboro for our fishing opener weekend we also ate breakfast at The Spud Boy’s Diner. We went in to look at it the day before and both decided to come back the next morning for breakfast. It’s a small little place made out of an old school box car. Not a lot of seats and, did I say pretty small? The owner is also the cook. A big older guy who seemed very friendly and the waitress also was very nice. We sat at the counter and started looking around at the very cool old-school Decour.
The place was not very clean and a little gross but somehow it seemed like not a problem for us. It was an old little greasy spoon.

Jeanne and I really enjoyed talking to the people working there. Gordy the owner told us how he got it in 2007 and refurbished it. (not sure where Jeanne got a few decades from) Here is where you can read about it yourself.

We told them that we are both in the restaurant industry. I told Gordy that I would have fun running a place like this. He informed me that it was for sale. I really like going to Lanesboro and the Trout fishing and all but, I would be so bored living there.
I ordered the western omelet with no tomatoes and Gordy rolled his eyes and joked about special order customers.
I really like the old short order cooking type situation and was feeling nostalgic about the place.
My omelet came and had raw egg on the inside. I asked Gordy to cook it a little more.

Fresh fried potatoes, old school Denver (western no tomatoes) omelet, coffee was not bad. We left the diner happy and fairly confident that I wasn’t going to be having intestinal problems later.
I will eat here again next time I’m down in Lanesboro

3 out of 4 stars.
(Still had sanitation concerns that can’t be overlooked)

Jeanne's Take:

I picked this place for breakfast because I found it to be interesting from the outside. It was quite interesting on the inside, too. Very old school and kitschy. I thought it would be super hot and muggy inside but it was pretty pleasant. There were only 12 seats at the counter so you can imagine how small the place is (it is an old box car, after all). We sat toward the back of the place and the very nice waitress brought us water and coffee. The coffee wasn't half bad and I noticed that they use an old school grinder that takes up a lot of retail space on the counter.

Check out that old school grinder with Gordy the owner in the background.
I ordered a waffle and bacon and it was pretty delicious. The waffle iron and surrounding station looked pretty gross, but for some reason I took the chance. It was pretty yummy. The syrup was also real maple and not the maple flavored corn syrup stuff you get everywhere else. That was a pleasant surprise.
This waffle was pretty great
Gordy was super nice and told us all about how he's owned the place for a few decades but he's looking to retire and sell it. We told him we were both chefs and that got him really talking up the place. Owning a little breakfast place would be really awesome, but I can't see myself living in a tiny town like Lanesboro. I moved out of a tiny town and tried to go back and it just didn't work out. I'm a city girl.

There are two booths plus 12 counter seats

I really liked our breakfast experience at this cute space. If we ever get back to Lanesboro I'd stop in again. I just hope that whomever buys it keeps it just the way it is.
