Hot Plate

Paul’s take:
We met my brother and sister-in-law at 9AM for breakfast at Hot Plate.
It was packed with a waiting space out front with chairs. People were playing bean bag toss in the yard. The wait wasn’t bad. Chatting with Jim and Lauri we learned that I had been here before, I forgot.
We got our table in the corner and the place was packed. The Decour inside this restaurant is a little bit strange to me. It looks like a thrift store absolutely packed full of random shit.
After a while our server came to the table and took our drink orders. When she finally returned to take our food orders she was abrasive and rushed with no personality and a fake interest. I wasn’t impressed by her table side manor.
I got the Carnitas scramble. Scrambled eggs, cheddar cheese, pork, jalapeños, onions, with fried potatoes and toast. $11.75.

The carnitas scramble was pretty good, and the sliced fresh jalapeños are starting to get a little bit of heat to them. The deep fried potato cubes are not that great ever.
All in all it was “not bad” and if someone wants to go there for breakfast again I would agree to go.

Jeanne's take:
We met Jim and Lauri at Hot Plate and there was about a 30 minute wait. It was warm out, but the temps hadn't reached full on oppressive yet, so that was good. The pager thing went off and we were seated in the corner by the front windows. I was told it was the same place Paul, Lauri, Jim, and the Creature from the Black Lagoon sat when they went there years ago. I really liked the decor. It is garage sale kitschy and the walls were filled with Paint-By-Numbers paintings, which I found pretty interesting.
Paint By Numbers!
It was insanely busy in the restaurant, with lots of people sitting outside waiting when we went in. The waitress came over and hurriedly took our drink order, which didn't seem so bad to me. I mean, it was crazy busy. Our food took a little while to arrive, and when it did, I was amazed at the size ans scope of this breakfast burrito I'd ordered:
ENORMOUS!

Loaded with meat, beans, cheese, egg, and covered in a spicy red salsa
This burrito was amazing. It was packed with meat, egg, beans, cheese, and covered with a spicy red salsa sauce type deal. It was so spicy that I had to ask for some extra sour cream. Paul also scooped some of the sauce off my plate and onto his eggs.
I ate all of it. Well, except for these last few bites. And then I realized: the burrito had ground beef in it. The menu said chorizo. There was no chorizo in it at all. It was still good. So good I didn't register the lack of chorizo, but I still would have preferred it over ground beef.

The waitress stopped back twice to see how we were doing, but she made it short and sweet. I stand by my opinion that she wasn't being rude but that she was very busy. We finished up, paid the bill, and let the next group of people have our spot. I liked Hot Plate a lot. We should probably go again when it isn't as crowded to get the full scope of all the kitsch.
