Red Stag Super Club

Paul’s take:
I have been to the Red Stag back probably six or seven years ago with the company I worked for. I went for dinner and it was pretty good and kind of creative and adventurous.
I think we can almost share credit for picking this one it was kind of a mutual choice. We got there shortly after nine, the place opens at 9 AM. MPR radio was there and we found out it was the "Saturday classical brunch with MPR" ok. There was only a few tables taken when we got in there. Our server brought us water and we ordered coffee. The water was kind of funky tasting like old pipes. The coffee arrived really quick and it was OK, not bad. Our server kept returning throughout our breakfast and kept my coffee cup full so that was nice.
First try
I ordered the smoked whitefish omelet that has cream cheese and a tossed green salad with a light vinaigrette. Really kind of a tired old standard at hipster places. I got my omelet and started eating.
It seemed like it was cooked OK and the white fish was not bad. After a bite or two I realized I hadn’t bitten into any cream cheese so I pulled back the egg a bit and looked inside and there was no cream cheese. I wanted to double check before I pointed it out to the server so I asked her for a menu to look at. She brought me the menu and as she was coming back asked me if there something wrong. I told her there was no cream cheese in my omelet . And it also said it had everything bagel seasoning. I asked what that was and she said the seasoning on top of an everything bagel. I guess that makes sense. She said she would go back and get me some cream cheese and Jeanne stopped her and said wait it supposed to be inside the omelette not just a cold side of cream cheese. The server took my omelet back to the kitchen and had them make me a new one.
Second try

Part deuce. You may notice my first one had just a little bit of chopped parsley on top but my second one had the "everything bagel seasoning". I think I will probably skip choices like this in the future. Also I’m really not a big fan of that toss spring mix with the light vinegarette thing. It really seems like a lazy cop out.
All in all it was a very average breakfast in a fairly boring restaurant with pasty white classical music shut-ins wearing wool hats.
We will never go back to Red Stag.

Jeanne's Take:
I had never been to Red Stag, but passed by it once a year on my way to Fox Tax. I was never super excited about going here, probably because the only other "supper club" I ever went to was one in St Paul somewhere back in 2007. My ex-husband's stepdad was in a jazz band and he would play there quite often. It was stuffy and dark and not my thing. But I still picked Red Stag for some reason, so...
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The bar area
The first thing I noticed when we sat down that I was one of the youngest people there, with a few college aged people eating with their parents. The other thing I noticed was the trend of older couples sitting on the SAME SIDE of a table or booth. What is that? How can you talk to each other? That behavior is weird to me. Plus one of the women was knitting, which is a total NE Mpls thing to do. Not bashing knitters or NE Mpls at all. Just a thing that's totes normal here.

I got coffee and water. Paul is right; the water had a funky taste. Not sure about old pipes, but it reminded me of the water at my Grandma's house on Long Island. Funky.

I ordered the Chicken and Waffles. I'm really dying for some over-the-top fantastic Chicken and Waffles. These were not bad. The waffle was crispy where it should be and so was the chicken. The gravy was pretty basic, but not bad. The dish tasted pretty good, but it didn't knock my socks off.

Chicken and Waffles

I probably had about three cups of coffee because the server was on top of it. The coffee was ok, but I always prefer a cold press, but they didn't have it on the menu. Oh - I also asked for a small glass of V-8, but I got at least 12 oz of the stuff. Not complaining because it's delicious, but I just wanted about 4oz so I could avoid ingesting a sodium bomb for breakfast.

This was an average breakfast at a place that has "MPR Classical Brunch", which is totally not my thing at all. The decor was old and dated, and yes, I know that was the idea, but it just added to the 'meh' factor. Also, pretty expensive for what we ordered. I won't be going back to Red Stag
